Under the ownership of Alex Barbour Footloose Fieldstudies has become a leading provider of walking, cultural heritage and dry stone walling courses
Up here near Shap, surrounded by limestones we are equidistant from the Yorkshire Dales, the volcanics of the Lake District and the sandstone of the lovely, little-known Eden Valley.

Your walling tutor will be Stephen Harrison, examiner for the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain and a Master Craftsman.

Dry Stone Walling

Come rid yourselves of the stresses of rapid living by handling stone.  Learn the practical skills of this ancient craft.

This dry stone country has a cultural heritage reaching back through history.

Cumbria has over 50 stone circles, places of mystery and solitude and is also home to modern interpretations of old sheep-gathering folds by sculptor Andy Goldsworthy.  A number of these are within easy reach of your walling site, dotted along ancient drive roads.

Walks

Join one of our open adult courses and explore the classic landscape of the Dales, fells and Lake District, the flowers of upland Britain, or get your hands on some rocks in one of our practical geology courses.
